Default Ranger Basic's

I have always said that the Ranger is one of the most versatile professions in Guild Wars, the amount of different roles that the ranger can play is endless, weather it be a simple Interupt Ranger, or a Ranger specifically built to spread conditions the Ranger is a powerful addition to any team and can also be one of the most fun and rewarding to play

Infact I would say the only time that a Ranger is at a disadvantage to other professions is on small party elite maps, such as the Titan Quest in Ascalon. But anywho lets start from the top eh?

Equipment

Insignias

Ranger Insignias seem to be rather under used, when infact they are pretty powerful and can provide an extra chunk of armor depending on the type of Ranger you are running. Lets have a closer look at the different types of Ranger specific Insignias...

Earthbound - Provides + 15 Armor vs Earth Damage.

Self Explanatory really, gives +15 armour to any incoming Earth Damage. While it is obviously good in an area where enemies use a lot of powerful Earth Magic (Sandstorm Crags!!), but this can be useful if running a Ranger/Elementalist combined with the skill [skill=text]Stone Striker[/skill] will give +15 armor while the enchantment is on you

Pyrebound - Provides + 15 Armor vs Fire Damage

Again, is useful in areas where there is a threat of Powerful Fire Magic (Flame Djinns), but its true colours really come out when combined with [skill=text]Greater Conflagration[/skill] and will give +15 armour while the spirit remains alive.

Frostbound - Provides + 15 Armor vs Cold Damage

The same as above except relating to Cold Damage. Combine with [skill=text]Winter[/skill] to gain +15 armor vs all elemental damage or use both [skill=text]Greater Conflagration[/skill] and [skill=text]Winter[/skill] to turn both physical and elemental damage to cold damage.

Stormbound - Provides + 15 Armor vs Lightning Damage

While there are no spirits or spells that convert damage to Lightning Damage it is important to note that it may be very useful in areas that are not only heavy with Air elementalists but also Ritualists as a lot of thier spells deal Lightning Damage.

Beastmaster's - Provides +10 Armor while your pet is alive.

I think this is one of the most useful Insignias for those who like to bring pets along with them. While it provides less of an armor bonus than the elemental based Insignias and is conditional it gives +10 armor from all sources. As long as you bring [skill=text]Comfort Animal[/skill] or a similar skill and keep an eye on your pet, this is a great Insignia.

Scout's - Provides + 10 Armor while under the effects of a Preparation

This is quite possibly the easiest 10 armor that can be gained in the game lol this gives you +10 armour while you have a preparation (we'll come to this later) on you, and this should be almost always! If your unsure of what a preparation is, read on in this guide

Bow's

The backbone of the Ranger is your bow. Every Ranger should have a bow, and every bow should be suited to not only the players style of play, but also to the type of build and skills used.

There are a total of 5 different types of bows in the game...
  • The Shortbow
  • The Flatbow
  • The Longbow
  • The Recurve Bow
  • And The Hornbow

Each bow has its own features and some may be considered better than others, but I believe that each bow is better suited to different jobs. There is a great table showing the Flight Time, Refire Rate, Range and Arc Size on Wiki and to be honest its perfect so I see no need to do anything except replicate it here...

Although this is a great table, I think it over-glorifies the Flatbow and leads many to believe that the Flatbow is the best bow in the game, and this is not true. But you will discover this as I go into more detail about each bow...

Shortbow

While the shortbow has the shortest range out of all the bows, it also has the quickest refire rate. The shortbow is probably the best bow for areas that you know you'll be toe to toe with the enemy. Its always good to have a back-up shortbow as one of your weapon sets incase the going gets tough and agro breaks of the Tank. Probably the best feature of the shortbow is the fact that your so close to the enemy and the flight time is so short, the chances of them dodging (or kiting) your arrows is very low

Its also good to note that Shortbows work exceptionally well with the skill [skill=text]Screaming Shot[/skill] as you will always be in range to trigger the conditional bleeding from the skill.

Flatbow

The Flatbow has a mean refire rate and the longest range of the bows (along with the longbow) which seems to make it a great choice, but to be honest its not all THAT great.

When firing from that range its rather hard to hit targets due to the large arc size, this combined with the long flight time means that the enemy has quite a considerable amount of time between when the arrow was fired and before it hits to move out of the way of the arrow rendering it useless.

On a plus note the flatbow is great for firing over obstables that would otherwise obstruct your line of sight. Fair enough this margin between the arc sizes is not limtless, but it is noticable and can be very handy.

Longbow

Ah the great longbow one of my favourites. It has great range, the best range in the game infact and while the refire rate leaves a little to be desired the flight time makes up for that. Itsa great bow for hitting targets from long ranges and when you combine it with [skill=text]Barrage[/skill] it really shows its true potential.

Recurve Bow

Now if theres a bow to have, this is it! While the range is rather short and it has by no means the quickest refire rate, the arrows come out of this thing so fast and hit thier target at lightning fast speed. This makes it very hard for the enemy to dodge your arrows and while other bows would struggle to hit moving targets this one is great for it. While you cantexpect every arrow to hit, it has a much better chance and success rate at hitting than the other bows.

This is one great all round bow. Its great for interupting due to the high speed of the arrows. Wakka recommended.

Hornbow

This is sort of a dark horse of the bows. Most people think its rubbish but in actual fact it deals the most damage. It has a very poor refire rate and average range, but this bow is made for spiking due to the armor penetration bonus and while it may be aimed more for PvP it still has its uses in PvE.

Consider skills that hit hard for this bow or have an additional sundering bonus such as [skill=text]sundering attack[/skill] as it does stack. Its also worthwhile to note the bonus penetration from this bow DOES stack with a Sundering Bow String.

Other Ranger Weapons

While they arent Ranger weapons per say, its often useful to have other weapons from other professions, or maybe even some of these may be required to play a specific build.

Spears

I think Spears are great weapons for any profession. Thier great for interupting easily interuptable skills such as traps due to thier fast firing rate. But what I love to use it for is interupting a dazed foe ^^ consider using [skill=text]Broad Head Arrow[/skill] and bringing a spear to interupt.

Wands, Staffs, Foci

These should only really be used in builds that dont require a bow to use. You can use to provide an energy bonus for the likes of traps, or maybe even a quicker recharge on spells such as [skill=text]Offering as Blood[/skill] as a trapper.

Weapon Sets

Its important to use your weapon sets when playing Ranger (or any profession) as you may need to quickly change your weapon at any time during the game. This is the set up that I use...

Weapon Set 1 - Shortbow (for toe to toe action)

Weapon Set 2 - Recurve Bow (the bow i'll use 90% of the time)

Weapon Set 3 - Longbow (for luring or ranged combat)

Weapon Set 4 - Spear (to interupt Dazed foes)

This is my set up but I would recommend just playing about with all the different bows in the game until you feel comfortable with them all and then customise your weapon sets to your own needs.

Ranger Skills

Right, now lets hit the real juicy bits of the guide. Before I dig right into the builds for Ranger, im going to identify things such as Traps, Interupts and Perperations to help you better understand how each of these work.

Traps

Traps dont really fit in that much into PvE except maybe for farming builds for high end elite areas. But for general play they dont get used too much. Due to the fact that thier easily interuptable the chance are you might not get that many off.

If your unsure what easily interuptable means, traps can be interupted by simple physical damage, weather it be a warrior bashing you, a Ranger from a distance or even a spell caster wanding you. It may be worth while however to note that this can be negated by the use of the elite skill [skill=text]Trappers Speed[/skill].

Traps are better used before-hand, then by luring enemies into the traps you can take out mobs in seconds. Although if your going into a map with a lot of choke points, specifically ones where waves of enemies attack you in a fixed position, traps can be very effective indeed. By trapping these choke points you can greatly hinder the enemy. Another style of play would be to aggressive Trap, which would be to run right up to your enemy and start laying traps beside him, this is risky though as you risk taking a lot of damage. Skills that block such as [skill=text]Natural Stride[/skill] are recommended when taking this apprach, not only to avoid some of the damage but also to give you a chance to get the traps off.

If you still want to try and fit a trap into your bar, I strongly recommend [skill=text]Dust Trap[/skill]. While it does have a massive energy cost, it not only deals damage but blinds foes. This meakes it a great defensive measure for when enemy warriors are running through your midline picking on squishy members of your team.

Preperations

Preperations are great! Im going to call them prep for short lol ^^ A prep is a skill that effects your bow attacks (although note that its not always bow attacks). Some preps provide a condition to your attacks, some provide you with more damage. You can only have one prep at a time, and for this reason you should generally only have one prep on your bar! (except maybe in special occassions.

The staple prep that I would recommend to you in most situations would be [skill=text]Apply Poison[/skill]. Its long lasting, not too expensive and can be kept up FOREVER. Making it quite possibly one of the best preps in the game. A similar one is [skill=text]Barbed Arrows[/skill], its cheaper but doesnt provide as much degen as poison would.

Another popular one is [skill=text]Choking Gas[/skill] to provide non-stop interupts to your target and all adjacent foes. While choking gas has a short duration, it can be kept up non-stop with [skill=text]Prepared Stance[/skill] so that may be something to consider.

Interupts

If it were down to me every Ranger in the game would have an interupt super glued to thier bar! While thier maybe not the fastest interupts in the game (Mesmer) due to the flight time of the arrows, they can be used to interupt any skill (not just spells).

The 2 staple Interupt skills in the Rangers skills would be [skill=text]Savage Shot[/skill] and [skill=text]Distracting Shot[/skill]. Savage Shot provides additional damage when an interupt is achieved on a spell, although it is high in energy but recharges quite fast. This should be used to interupt skills or spells with a long recharge time e.g. [skill=text]Meteor Shower[/skill]. Distracting Shot is very cheap and disables the skill that was interupted for an additional 20 seconds, but has a long recharge time and sacrifices its damage. This makes a great skill to interupt spammable skills and put the enemy out of action. e.g. [skill=text]Mind Blast[/skill]. Quite possibly one of the best skills in the game.

[skill=text]Concussion Shot[/skill] is another form of interupt, its useful in the fact that it causes daze when it interupts a spell. However its high energy cost means that it will not get used on most Ranger bars.

When looking at elite skills 2 stick out for miles. [skill=text]Punishing Shot[/skill] and [skill=text]Magebane Shot[/skill]. Punishing Shot is a great skill that has a very quick recharge although a high-ish energy cost stops you from mindlessly spamming it and still requires you to time your shots. The great thing about Punishing is that not only does it interupt, but it delivers unconditional bonus damage, even if it doesnt interupt. The latter of the 2 skill, Magebane Shot, recently got a massive buff in the latest buff. It has a very low energy cost and recharge time which makes it great for quick interupts, it also cant be blocked meaning it will hit your target even through enchantments such as SoD. And if that wasnt enough, it disables the skill it interupts for 10 seconds, making it potentially one of the best interupts in the game.

Expertise

Expertise is the Rangers primary attribute that you should not be shy with attribute points towards. This isnt only as it provides you with some good skills such as distracting shot, but also due to the fact that it reduces the energy cost of your skills. To help you better understand here is the description straight from GW itself...

"For each rank of Expertise, the Energy cost of all of your attacks, Rituals, touch skills, and Rangers skills are decreased by 4%. Several skills, especially those related to Energy costs and skill recharge times, become more effective with higher Expertise."

Here is a table taken from wiki showing the energy reduction for each rank in Expertise...

As you can see at 16 Expertise it reduces the cost of of a 25 energy spell to only 9 energy! A huge reduction of 16 energy! And its passive, meaning that this doesnt only occur once, it happens everytime you use skill.

Its also worthwhile to note that Expertise does not effect spells. So a 20 energy spell will still cost 20 energy regardless of your Expertise rank. However it does effect attack skills from other professions and also Touch skills. It also effects the Binding Rituals from the Ritualist profession which is quite interesting

Nature Rituals

If the ranger doesnt have enough unique features too them, they also have the ability to create Nature Spirits that have different effects. They effect both (or all) teams/players within range. The effect then goes away once the spirit dies after a set time, or has been killed by the enemy.

Nature Rituals can be very powerful if you prepare your team to deal with them. For example if you are using [skill=text]Natures Renewal[/skill], prepare your team so that none of them are using enchantments. When entering an enchantment heavy area this can be devestating on enemies.

Pets

While Guild Wars allows you to pack your skill bar full of pet attacks, to be honest the chances of you using any is very slim. You'll find that you can do the job a lot more effectivly yourself. Take [skill=text]Poisonous bite[/skill] for example, it is much easier to simply use Apply Poison and spread it throughout enemies than to select each enemy and command your pet to attack and use the skill itself. This is the case with most of the skills.

Most pet builds are quite gimmicky and shouldn really be taken too seriously, but I believe that the pet can make a nice addition to your team and help to increase your overall DPS.

Rather than packing your bar full of pet attack skills, only bring [skill=text]comfort animal[/skill] and [skill=text]charm animal[/skill]. These are the only 2 skills you will/should need. Fire your Beast Mastery up quite high, to about 8 or 9 and thats the height of it. Your pet will not deliver steady damage, when combined with your own attacks you should be able to deliver quite a high DPS.

Once your pet reaches a certain level, it then evolves. Depending on what it evolves into is based on the amount of damage dealed by the pet and the amount of damage taken by the pet. Dire pets are gained by the pet dealing a lot of damage and ensuring that you have a low ratio of damage compared to your pet, a Hearty pet is gained by the pet taking a lot of damage and due to the fact that you would be dealin a lot more damage than the pet (which is generally the case).

A dire/aggressive pet deals more damage but has a lower amount of HP while a Hearty/Playful pet has a larger amount of HP but deals less amage. And Elder pet is the medium of the 2.

Below I have copy and pasted the differences of the pets damage and hpdepending on how they evolve. from Guru...

You can find this entire pet guide here...

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=89491

You can find a full guide to evolving a Dire Pet in the guide below...

http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Guide_t...ing_a_Dire_Pet

Its also worth to note that some animals deal piercing damage while others deal slashing. For these details please see here..

http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Pet#Pet_attacks

Its also worth noting that al pets attack at the same speed regardless of the damage type. The only exception to this is the bear. While it attack at the same speed, it uses the skill Brutal Mauling. Because this attack takes longer to exectute than a longer attack, therefore the bears DPS is slightly lower than the other pets. However it does have a bonus in that the attack skill will trigger skills such as [skill=text]Anthem of Envy[/skill] and [skill=text]Anthem of disruption[/skill] meaning that if used right, it may be a lot more useful

Another note, Moa Birds seem to have the fastest attack rate when they are at low levels. Testing has showen that a low level moa bird attacks quicker than any other level 5 pet. This inscreased attack speed seems to reduce as the pet levels (or all the other pets start to attack quicker )

Secondary Profession As A Ranger

Now there are many options open to you when choosing a secondary profession and some are more useful than others...

Warrior

The biggest weakness in the Rangers army is that they have a lack of skills that increase attack speed. The Warrior secondary provides skills such as [skill=text]Frenzy[/skill] and [skill=text]Flurry[/skill].

Its also possible to arm your Ranger with a Hammer and become a Thumper (see later) delivering quick knockdowns and a high level of DPS (Damage per second).

Monk

The monk secondary allows you to use skill such as [skill=text]Judge's Insight[/skill] to convert your damage to Holy Damage. This can be especially useful in areas with a lot of undead enemies as you will find that [skill=text]Barrage[/skill] can dispose of them very quickly e.g. Shards of Orr

[skill=text]Mending Touch[/skill] can also be added to make the Ranger more self-dependant and relive some pressure that the monks have to deal with.

Mesmer

The use of [skill=text]Epidemic[/skill] can allow you to quickly spread a mass of conditions through your enemies casuing massive degen. [skill=text]Mantra of Flame[/skill] can also be used along with Greater Congflataion to greatly reduce damage and provide energy.

Necromancer

The infamous Toucher is one of the favour Ranger/Necromancer builds. Combining the Rangers Expertise with the Necromancers Touch Skills allows you to keep yourself alive by stealing life from your enemies.

Elementalist

[skill=text]Conjure Flame[/skill] or other Conjure skills can help to greatly increase the DPS of your bow. Combine with the bow string of the same element.

Ritualist

There are a lot of different weapon skills that the Ranger can use on himself (or other team mates) to greatly increase the damage output. Examples of these are [skill=text]Splinter Weapon[/skill] and [skill=text]Brutal Weapon[/skill].

Assassin

Due to the high cost of skill chains used by Assassins, Rangers can use thier expertise to greatly reduce the cost making them more efficent and allowing them to afford a second chain quicker than normal.

Elite Skills

Elite Skills are what really set professions different than each other, for that reason I would like to go into some details about what I think are some of the best or overlooked Elite Skills for the Ranger profession ^^ If your unsure of how the skill works roll your mouse over the skills name and gwbbcode will do the rest :P

[skill=text]Broad Head Arrow[/skill] - One of my favourite skills for PvE, as the AI isnt the smartest, Daze is insanely overpowered. And the fact its linked to marksmanship really helps to boost this skills effectivness allowing your to daze for up to and around 20 seconds. Just be careful of the slow flight time which may result in the arrow missing. Be sure to hit a stationary target or cripple/snare your target before hand.

[skill=text]Burning Arrow[/skill] - A cookie cutter Ranger skill in both PvE an PvP, Burning Arrow delivers not only a considerable amount of damage but also a generous burning duration. With a decent energy cost and an average recharge, this skill finds itself very welcome on your Rangers skill bar. Couple it with bleeding or poison to max out degen on your foes.

[skill=text]Glass Arrows[/skill] - Based more for PvP spikes, Glass Arrows delivers quite a high amount of Bonus damage. It couples well with Conjure spells or Ritualist weapon spells. The bleeding is only a minor bonus to this skill.

[skill=text]Barrage[/skill] - A great skill for when enemies are clumped together, hitting up to 6 targets at once it can be desestating and requires very little skill. The low energy cost and quick recharge allows you to spam this skill almost non stop. Use a zealous bow string for energy management.

[skill=text]Oath Shot[/skill] - Oath shot is generally used in Trapping builds or builds that use a lot of nature spirits or other skills with long recharge times. The majority of the builds are gimmicky but still may be effective. May sure to equip a recurve bow or snare your target to ensure the arrow hits.

[skill=text]Crippling Shot[/skill] - Regarded as more of a PvP skill, most PvE'ers overlook Crip Shot as thier Ranger elite. But in higher end areas with a lot of melee or exceptionally strong melee (SF Deep Summit Knights in HM), Cripshot can be very very effective. It really helps to relieve pressure of your monks if agro is broke.

Skills

Now i'll delve into the world of non-elite skills. Of course some are going to be better than others and lets face it im not gonna cover the hundreds of them they are so i'll just go over the ones that I think are essential to know as a Ranger (although I suppose a good Ranger should know all his skills lol and im not gonna cover those already mentioned) anyways! ...

[skill=text]Natural Stride[/skill] - This skill is a great skill, linked to Wilderness Survival, it not only provides a speed boost but a 50% chance to block skills making it a great tool for kiting away from damage. While the duration leaves a little to be desired, if used right this can be very very effective.

[skill=text]Keen Arrow[/skill] - Such a great skill I would marry it ^^ This is a beauty! Not only is it a dirt cheap and fairly quick recharge, but it does a good bit of unconditional damage. But when it achieves a critical it does an insane amount of damage! Have a Paragon with [["Go For The Eyes!"] in your team to have a higher chance to hit with a critical. It also links well with Punishing Shot as they both have similar recharges. Keen Arrow quickly followed by Punishing Shot can deliver an obscene amount of damage in a very short amount of time.

[skill=text]Throw Dirt[/skill] - A nice skill tied into expertise. It is great when the going gets tough and theres melee in your face. As long as you dont run off to the frontline to cast this, its easy enough to use. Great for relieving a lot of pressure.

Sloth Hunter's Shot - I find this similar to keen arrow. Its a great skill but does even better damage once you meet the conditions. A slighty higher energy cost would sway me to put Keen Arrow in my bar before this but its still quite effective.

[skill=text]Dual Shot[/skill] - It used to be a super skill, and it still is great. It delivers 2 slighty weaker arrows than normal. While each arrow behaves on its own (one could be blocked while the other hits). It works great with the likes of [[Kindle Arrows].

[skill=text]Favorable Winds[/skill] - This skill is a must in a Ranger heavy party. It not only allows your arrows to deal more damage but makes them travel a lot faster making them virtually un-kitable ^^.

[skill=text]Troll unguent[/skill] - The one, the only, Troll Ungunet. While it may not be the most effective heal in the game its great for a Ranger. Really helps to counter a lot of degen and I would normally use it to relieve some pressure of the monks. While the 3 second cast time can be a bit of a pain in the arse, this skill can cost as low as 2 energy depending on your Expertise level and is well worth being on your bar.

[skill=text]Serpent's Quickness[/skill] - Quite a funky skill that can be used amongst all professions. Its great for using bars that has a lot of long recharges, such as a Trapper. The fact its a stance and not a preperation means it is a lot more effective.

Builds

I have put together a number of different Ranger builds below, along with a description (I will add attribs later tonight)...

General Burning Arrow

[skill]Burning Arrow[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill] Optional Optional [skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

A good all round build for PvE with a bit of room for different skills and experimentation. Try and keep Apply Poison up at all times when in battle, and use it combined with Burning Arrow to provide max degen coupled with quite a nice damage output. Use Savage and Distracting for interupting. Troll for your self heal.

For your option slots consider...
  • [skill=text]Epidemic[/skill]
  • [skill=text]Conjure Flame[/skill]
  • [skill=text]Mending Touch[/skill]
  • [skill=text]Natural Stride[/skill]
  • [skill=text]Pin Down[/skill]

You could also swap Res Sig for a hard res ^^

When in an area with no "fleshies", swap out apply poison for something that will help to increase your DPS e.g. [skill=text]Read the Wind[/skill], [skill=text]Kindle Arrows[/skill]. Note: Destroyers are immune to the burning condition.

General Broad Head Arrow

[skill]Pin Down[/skill][skill]Broad Head Arrow[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Troll unguent[/skill] Optional [skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

Similar to the burning Arrow Ranger but with a few twists. Use Broad Head Arrow (BHA) only on enemy casters, its great against enemy bosses. Hit them with pin down first then follow through with BHA, make sure to keep Apply Poison up as to cover the daed condition.

Remember if your having trouble with a Dervish boss, a lot of his skills are enchantments, so use BHA to shut him down. The same goes for assassins, thier main heal, Shadow Refuge, is an enchantment so remember its not only casters that use spells

Practicated Stance Interupter

[skill]Practiced Stance[/skill][skill]Choking Gas[/skill][skill]Flurry[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill] Optional Optional iOptional [skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

This build is used more for interupting than damage output (hence Flurry). Cast Practiced Stance followed by Choking Gas. Re-cast both whenever thier avaiable. Use Flurry to increase your attack speed, interupting more often. Its a good idea to use a Recurve or Shortbow when playing this build.

A pet can be added to this build to increase your DPS, but be careful not to stretch your attributes.

Ebon Dust Arrow

[skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Ebon Dust Aura[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill] Optional [i]Optional/i] [skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

A very anti-melee build, designed to blind a lot of enemies at once due to Volly. Casy up Ebon Dust Aura and keep it up at all times. Spam Volley to blind up to 4 enemies at a time. If you want to add degen to your build, remove Volley and put in [skill=text]Apply Poison[/skill].

This build requires an Ebon bowstring to work.

Thumper

[skill]Hammer Bash[/skill][skill]Crushing Blow[/skill][skill]Bestial Mauling[/skill] Optional [skill]Rampage as one[/skill][skill]Comfort Animal[/skill][skill]Charm Animal[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

This is an up-in-your-face build. Give your Ranger a hammer and run up and bash foes while activiting Rampage As One. Use Hammer Bash for knockdowns, then either Bestial Mauling to daze your enemy or Crushing Blow to give them a Deep Wound. Rampage as One requires you pet to be alive to use.

For the optional spot consider [skill=text]Energising Wing[/skill] or another knockdown skill such as [skill=text]counter attack[/skill].

Touch Ranger

[skill]vampiric touch[/skill][skill]vampiric bite[/skill][skill]Offering of Blood[/skill][skill]Plague touch[/skill][skill]Throw Dirt[/skill][skill]Whirling Defense[/skill][skill]Dodge[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

The infamous Toucher! Known throughout GW for being lame lol but its not actually a bad build for PvE, it works great for farming a lot of bosses in Factions and NF ^^ Your main attacks are Vamp Touch and Vamp Bite. Use Offering of Blood for enery management. Plague Touch to rid you of any conditions, and the rest of the skills to keep you from harms way.

Barrage/Pet Ranger

[skill]Barrage[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Comfort Animal[/skill][skill]Charm Animal[/skill] Optional Optional [skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]

This is the good old Barrage/Pet build that has been used for years in Tombs and FoW. It is stil in use however its been weakened as of late due to the fact that pets no longer leave exploitable corpses.

Anywho is easy enough, just spam Barrage. But the real fun comes in when your choosing the optional slots, consider some of these..

[skill=text]Throw Dirt[/skill]
[skill=text]Dust Trap[/skill]
[skill=text]Splinter Weapon[/skill]
[skill=text]Poisonous Bite[/skill]

Just go mad ^^

B/P groups run daily in FoW and Tombs.

Duo Stygian Trapping

[skill]Arcane Echo[/skill][skill]Echo[/skill][skill]Dust Trap[/skill][skill]Barbed Trap[/skill][skill]Tripwire[/skill][skill]Serpent's Quickness[/skill][skill]Quickening Zephyr[/skill][skill]Energizing Wind[/skill]

[skill]Arcane Echo[/skill][skill]Echo[/skill][skill]Dust Trap[/skill][skill]Barbed Trap[/skill][skill]Flame Trap[/skill][skill]Serpent's Quickness[/skill][skill]Energizing Wind[/skill][skill]Edge of Extinction[/skill]

Once the maps loaded head straight forward, ignore the first group of baddies and keep going till you see 2 Order of Whispers dude. Take the mission and the LB hunt thing if you want, run on past them a bit and avoid agro of the baddies running out.

Once they've stopped moving, run through onto the red bit of the map and read head until your directly facing the baddies (you can see a small bit where the wall gos in a bit).

The 1st trapper starts by casting EW followed by QZ. Once thier up start your Echo chain. Cast Arcane Echo followed by Echo and then Dust Trap, this should give you 2 dust traps. Now cast Echo again (The one you jus Arcaned) and another Dust Trap, giving you 3. Follow this up with Barbed Trap and then Tripwire/Flame Trap. Take a few steps from your current spot, and start casting again. Keep Serpants Quickness up as much as you can. Once the first EW dies, the second Range should then cast his.

When the spirts die, recast them, this is also a good time to put EoE up, try casting EoE further back so it doesnt get killed first. You have around 30 seconds when EW goes down so start counting. When your ready lure the baddies and run right round the way you came and out of the red guff, should kill them all.

The only real hard part about this farm are the Fiends which can be annoying. When luring them try to avoid Cripshot. It may take a few goes to get the Fiends down. Its also an idea to put at least one of the spirits further back so they walk into the traps.

Despite getting lots of Stygian Gemstones, which are only worth 1.5k, you get quite a bit of gold drops in Hard Mode including Gloom Shields, Shadow Axes, Stoneshard Hornbows, Bladed Recurve Bows, Igneous Mauls etc. ^^

Overview

Playing a Ranger can be taxing to learn how at first but its really not that hard. Most Rangers require a good FPS to play well, otherwise your going to have trouble interupting anything with a 1 second cast time. But keep at it

I stil believe that the Range is one of the best professions in the game in most aspects and lets face it, killing stuff with a bow and arrow is just cool (although not as cool as throwing pinty sticks at people )

If you have any questions please PM me and i'll be happy to help ^^

Footnote: If you wish to submit any additional builds please do PM me on guru please excuse any formatting/typing errors as this was done on GWBBCode and I havent got time to check it all

Otherwise, nice guide.

Longbow

Ah the great longbow one of my favourites. It has great range, the best range in the game infact and while the refire rate leaves a little to be desired the flight time makes up for that. Itsa great bow for hitting targets from long ranges and when you combine it with Barrage {E}
it really shows its true potential.
Longbows have really only one use: if a target is running away from you and he is outside of Recurve Bow range, you switch to a Crippling Longbow and shoot a [skill]Pin Down[/skill] or [skill]Crippling Shot[/skill] at him and pray it hits.
Otherwise Longbows suck. You will never hit anything at range with its high arc and it sucks at interrupting due to slow flight time.

Quote:
Hornbow

This is sort of a dark horse of the bows. Most people think its rubbish but in actual fact it deals the most damage. It has a very poor refire rate and average range, but this bow is made for spiking due to the armor penetration bonus and while it may be aimed more for PvP it still has its uses in PvE.

Consider skills that hit hard for this bow or have an additional sundering bonus such as Sundering Attack
as it does stack. Its also worthwhile to note the bonus penetration from this bow DOES stack with a Sundering Bow String.
Actually it deals the LEAST damage... It's used in spikes because each hit goes for more damage and Savage Shot can circumvent the slow refire on spikes, but for average DPS it has the worst overall damage.

Quote:
Warrior

The biggest weakness in the Rangers army is that they have a lack of skills that increase attack speed. The Warrior secondary provides skills such as Frenzy
and Flurry
.

Its also possible to arm your Ranger with a Hammer and become a Thumper (see later) delivering quick knockdowns and a high level of DPS (Damage per second).
More useful would be [skill]Lightning Reflexes[/skill][skill]"On Your Knees!"[/skill] and a knockdown of your choice, ex. [skill]Devastating Hammer[/skill][skill]Earth Shaker[/skill][wiki]Club of a Thousand Bears[/wiki]

Quote:
Monk

The monk secondary allows you to use skill such as Judge's Insight
to convert your damage to Holy Damage. This can be especially useful in areas with a lot of undead enemies as you will find that Barrage {E}
can dispose of them very quickly.
[skill]Mending Touch[/skill]? Probably the most used Monk skill on R/Mo's...and you leave it out.
Judge's Insight is pretty useless on Rangers anyway.

Quote:
Barrage {E}
- A great skill for when enemies are clumped together, hitting up to 6 targets at once it can be desestating and requires very little skill. The low energy cost and quick recharge allows you to spam this skill almost non stop. Use a zealous bow string for energy management.
[skill]Splinter Weapon[/skill] + [wiki]Volley[/wiki] and a more useful elite > Barrage any day...

I didnt say DPS I said damage In one shot it could do more damage than any other bow.

The OYN/LR combo is guff lol please dont use it.

Mending Touch aint that effective in PvE really unless in a very condition heavy area, in which case I would bring pure Was mi Ling on myself I added a note however

A few notes ...

The bow table does not glorify anything, it lists measured flight data of various types of bows. For each bow there are situations where it is the most efficient choice, but there are no bows that are always the best.

Keep in mind that the hornbow armor penetration does not increase damage from the bonus damage on most attack skills, nor on the extra damage from preps and spirits. It should however apply to the extra raw damage from skills like [wiki]Vow of Silence[/wiki]

The preparation that should have been mentioned is [wiki]Read the Wind[/wiki]. Not only does it halve the arrow's flighttime, it adds (armor ignoring) bonus damage - with a DPS comparable to poison - and is linked to marksmanship rather then Wilderness Survival.

Pets
I think you've completely missed out on them and your advice to only bring Charm and Comfort is the worst I've seen in any guide. A good (hybrid) beastmaster build can output higher sustained (pressure) DPS then most ranger builds can. Not only the extra tank may be worthwhile, or the damage from [wiki]Enraged lunge[/wiki] , but a wide range of utility skills - from IAS to nature rituals - can complement your bow oriented skills.

Elite skills
[wiki]Magebane shot[/wiki] is one of the better interrupt skills, low cost, fast recharge, unblockable and a 10 second disable (on spells) ...

Btw, I did the Ascalon Titan quest with heroes and I don't see why rangers would have a (disabling) disadvantage there.

Sorry not a fan of pets mate ^^ I see them as more of a liability more than anything. I would rather play a more traditional Ranger with interupts and AP or something similar Up to your own personal preferance I suppose.

As for Magebane...

Quote:
And if that wasnt enough, it disables the skill it interupts for 10 seconds, making it potentially one of the best interupts in the game.
Yes I have mentioned that in the Interupt section ^^ Just need a bit of formatting.

Bunny thumper is not about dps, it is simply more pressure on a monk because it is unkitable and can reliably deliver daze were a warrior cant. also..dont encourage people to hit 16 expertise..sup runes are baed. It should also be noted that a flatbow is the best when it comes to ganking bases in a gvg due to the fast refire and that the npc's dont move which negates the arc.

secondly

NO..rangers power does not come from dps it comes from utility and being runing a beast master for anything other then fun is a waste of time.
RTW is not even close when it comes to ap. a spreadable condition that is "free" to reapply with every shot is more valuable then an unneccessary increase in flight time and a slight dmg increase.

It's a game, I play it for fun. Including adding a pet, even for damage. And what is Burning Arrow doing besides damage? Half of the skillbar of a standard Burning Arrow or Other Ganksman variation is rarely, if ever, used in PvE.
It requires about 2~4 slots to carry essential ranger utility, be it interrupts or burning arrows or a combination and this leaves enough slots for pet-skills to make it more useful then the Charm/Comfort meatshield.

Apply poison does not work that well when traveling with heroes and henchies, who tend to follow your lead and may switch targets, thereby spreading firepower. Poison will not work at all on non-fleshy creatures, Read the Wind will add it's bonus against all targets. RtW is linked to marksmanship so you could use another attribute line then Wilderness Survival.
I think Apply Poison is good, but I do not think there should be nothing else on your bar ever.

Please don't use [skill=text]Frenzy[/skill] on a Ranger either......

Read the Wind makes arrows fly faster and allows you to interrupt 1 second casts consistently without having to run to the frontline and stand next to the target. The damage is just a bonus.

RtW gives a small edge of about .2 to .3 seconds and if you interrupt 1 sec skills without it, you could interrupt 3/4 sec skill with it.

great guide id say for beginning rangers but is this pvp or pve geared at...
from what i read its geared toward pve or so it seems

if only someone made one geared toward pvp thatd be nice

overall though, what i saw was decent enough

also dudes should give him a break god maybe he didnt read it over enough for some of the small stuff you pointed out... and pets are useless from a pvp perspective imo...

Cheers mate, yes its more towards PvE I would have made a PvP one but too many ego-maniacs waiting to tear apart new threads

Try standing right beside an enemy and trying to interupt a 3/4 skill. If you can interupt it while next to him but cant do it from a distance use RtW as it is the delay from your arrows which is makin you miss. If you cant do it at all bring BHA lol

A decrease of the distance would decrease flight time, yes. But standing next to the foe I am trying to interrupt - usually somewhere in their back line - is not usually my strategy.
